How to get a photo below 200 KB

When a form imposes a limit, reduce file size gradually and check that the image stays readable.

Check the form’s requirements first

File size might not be the only restriction. A portal may also require JPG, minimum pixel dimensions, a specific background or exact proportions. Write down these conditions first. The file-size mode can reduce pixel dimensions and does not guarantee minimum dimensions or compliance with official document requirements.

A four-step approach

  1. Open the file-size limit tool and select your photo.
  2. Set 200 KB and choose a format accepted by the recipient. JPG is often practical for photos.
  3. Press Process images and read the final size, rather than just the percentage saved.
  4. Download the file, open it and inspect text, faces and details before submitting it.

Quality and pixels are different controls

Lower quality changes how much information is retained during encoding. Reducing pixels changes the dimensions of the image. A 6000 × 4000 px photo may be unnecessary for a small online panel: resizing it can help more than aggressive compression. If a minimum width must be preserved, use manual resizing and compare several quality settings.

KB and KiB are different

PixelSvelto treats 200 KB as 200,000 bytes. A 200 KiB limit means 204,800 bytes. The decimal threshold is more conservative, but the receiving service may perform other checks or re-encode your file. Always read the portal’s response after uploading.

Do not shrink a document photo until its text is unreadable. If the required size and readability cannot both be met, check the receiving service’s instructions or support.

If the output is still too large

The automatic attempt uses a limited number of passes. A warning tells you when the target has not been reached. Try WebP if it is accepted, remove unnecessary pixels by resizing, or select another size threshold. Keep the original: further compression cannot restore discarded detail.
